new strategies for determining which patients
need sentinel node identification and biopsy.
- Identify
specific criteria to determine appropriate
margins for local excision of melanoma.
- Apply
criteria to determine the appropriate application
of sentinel lymph node biopsy for breast
cancer.
- Identify
a specific strategy to improve sentinel
lymph node identification.
- Identify
appropriate management options for Ductal
Carcinoma in situ.
- Apply
specific criteria to determine which women
are appropriate candidates for breast conservation
surgery.
- Determine
the elements of E/M coding for application
to billing procedures.
- Select
specific strategies for compliance with
Pay-for-Performance guidelines.
- Identify
appropriate candidates with colorectal carcinoma
for surgical resection of liver metastases.
- Select
appropriate patients for liver tumor ablation
and other liver-directed therapies.
- Identify
the unique characteristics in the presentation
and diagnostic work-up of patients with
islet cell tumors.
- Recognize
the appropriate surgical approach for patients
with these tumors.
- Select
appropriate patients for a new surgical
approach to primary hyperparathyroidism.
- Apply
a new diagnostic approach for patients with
a solitary thyroid nodule.
- Identify
patients who would benefit from newer solitary
thyroid nodule diagnostic maneuvers.
- Identify
the impact of new technology as it is introduced
into clinical practice.
- Identify
strategies that permit the safe implementation
of new technology in one's clinical practice.
- Identify
three tumors that have SST-2 receptors.
- Discuss
the clinical significance of SST-2 receptors
in patient management.
- Apply
the concept of targeted tumor therapy with
radiolabeled peptides to induce tumor destruction.
- Identify
three risk factors associated with a patient
filing a malpractice claim.
- Apply
strategies to reduce and minimize the impact
of medical-legal risk.
- Discuss
the two aspects of "Closed Claims Analysis"
and two strategies that may be employed
in clinical practice.
- Identify
the characteristics that separate bariatric
procedures into categories and how this
may be used to identify appropriate weight
loss procedures for individual patients.
- Identify
patients at risk for the enterohepatic syndrome
associated with bariatric
surgery.
- Employ
strategies that are useful for prevention
and management of enterohepatic syndrome
associated with bariatric surgery.
- Recognize
the areas of general surgery where the acute
shortage of surgeons has had the greatest
impact.
- Discuss
how the demographics of surgical training
will impact the delivery of surgical care
in your practice.
- Apply
the current demographics of surgical training
to finding local solutions to surgical manpower
shortages.
- Discuss
the concept of the "rural surgeon"
and why this may or may not solve many of
the surgical manpower issues in the underserved
areas of the United States.
- Identify
patients who are candidates for palliative
procedures for pancreatic cancer.
- Apply
new techniques for pancreatic resection
for malignancy.
- Discuss
the surgical maneuvers that can result in
common bile duct injury and the strategies
to prevent this complication.
- Apply
surgical techniques to repair injures to
the bile ducts.
- Identify
suitable patients for a surgical approach
to management of their acute pancreatitis.
- Utilize
endoscopic and surgical interventions for
complications of acute pancreatitis.
- Identify
patients who may be candidates for referral
to regional centers for complex operations.

the volume/outcome relationship for various
surgical procedures to current surgical
practice and referral.
- Apply
the pathophysiology of chest injuries to
clinical management.
- Identify
the appropriate diagnostic and treatment
options for blunt and penetrating thoracic
injures.
- Define
the current crisis faced by the health care
system with respect to surgical care.
- Discuss
potential strategies that can be employed
to avert disaster related to the current
health care crisis in surgical care.
- Identify
the key components of the proposed Acute
Care Surgery Curriculum.
- Discuss
the potential impact the Acute Care Surgery
Curriculum will have on surgical management
of emergencies and injury.
- Discuss
the impact of the evolution of management
of traumatic aortic disruption on current
practice.
- Implement
an effective treatment algorithm for patients
with wide mediastinum into the practice
of a non-trauma surgeon.
- Employ
new techniques for the exposure of vascular
injuries of the neck, torso and extremities
to improve surgical outcome.
- Employ
the important decision-making steps and
the surgical tricks that maximize outcomes
in vascular injuries of neck, torso and
extremities.
