Educational Objectives:

As a result of attending these sessions, participants should be able to use current clinical recommendations, based on best evidence, to more competently:
  • Manage patients with stroke in both the inpatient and outpatient setting.
  • Use breast cancer risk assessment models (Gail and Klaus) to identify candidates for MRI breast screening.
  • Use clinical guidelines to manage patients with heart failure.
  • Use recent advances and evidence-based clinical guidelines in the management of diabetic patients in the outpatient setting.
  • Improve the treatment of hyperglycemia and diabetes in the hospitalized patient.
  • Manage patients with epilepsy in both the inpatient and outpatient setting.
  • Better educate patients about potential risks/benefits of hormone therapy.
  • Use clinical guidelines to manage patients with a-fibrillation.
  • Evaluate and manage patients with peripheral artery disease.
  • Evaluate and treat thyroid problems in an efficient and cost-effective manner.
  • Evaluate and manage patients with chronic headaches.
  • Implement guidelines for using HPV DNA testing for screening purposes.
  • Utilize a brief diagnostic screening tool to identify generalized acquired hypoactive sexual desire disorder.
  • More effectively provide peri-operative management of the patient with heart disease.
  • To diagnose and manage endocrine and hormone disorders encountered by the clinician using a case-based approach.
  • Identify and manage patients with altered mental status.

Purpose Statement:
The purpose of this activity is to enhance physicians' competence in the ACGME/ABMS competency areas. This activity includes an update on the recent advances made in the clinical management of the most common disorders seen in the practice of internal and family medicine.
Target Audience:
This course is designed for internists, other primary care physicians, and those interested in internal medicine.
Educational Format:
The format for this course consists of 45-minute lectures, each followed by a 15-minute question and answer period in which participants will also be encouraged to discuss with faculty potential barriers to implementation of new practice strategies. The sessions are designed to facilitate exchange of information and dialogue between presenting faculty and participants.
