Educational Purpose:
The purpose of this activity is to provide a comprehensive update and review on current issues and contemporary topics in anesthesiology. The course is designed for anesthesiologists and certified nurse anesthetists.
Educational Objectives:
After attending this course, participants should be able to:

-Describe the pharmacology of agents commonly used for the treatment of pain.
-Discuss the perioperative myocardial ischemia/infarction.
-Illustrate the physiology of pain transduction, transmission, modulation, and perception.
-Compare anesthesia for AAA (open, endovascular and laparoscopic).
-Conduct a preoperative cardiac evaluation prior to non-cardiac surgery.
-Review anatomy and topographical landmarks important to the anesthesiologist treating pain.
-Describe potential positioning injuries during anesthesia.
-Examine obesity and sleep apnea.
-Discuss issues relating to the legal prescribing of opioids for the treatment of pain.
-Relate the changes in pulmonary mechanics in the injured lung; the limitations of the conventional mechanical ventilator; patient/ventilator interactions, and discuss alternative ventilatory methods, including tracheal gas insufflation, High Frequency Oscillation and partial liquid ventilation.
-Explain the application of HFO ventilation to the injured lung; the methods of exchange in HFO; its limitations and physiology.
-Describe responsibilities of anesthesia providers in instructing primary airway management/sedation skills to non-anesthesia providers.
-Define oxidative stress and antioxidants and describe the use of antioxidants as an adjunct to therapy in critical illness.
-Describe methods for the prevention of common errors in anesthesiology.
-Examine the use of ketamine for anesthesia and conscious sedation.
-Describe the pathophysiology of brain injury; the fundamentals of management of the injured brain; and the advances in therapy of the injured brain.
Target Audience: This course is designed for anesthesiologists and certified nurse anesthetists.
Educational Format:
The format for this course consists of one hourlectures, followed by a 15-minute question and answer period at the end of each day. The sessions are designed to facilitate exchange of information and dialogue between presenting faculty and participants.
Other Items:
Each participant will receive a course syllabus. Certificates of credit will be distributed upon completion of the course.
Statement of Accreditation:
The University of South Carolina School of Medicine-Palmetto Health Richland Continuing Medical Education Organization is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Educational to provide continuing medical education for physicians.
Statement of Credit:
The University of South Carolina School of Medicine-Palmetto Health Richland Continuing Medical Education Organization designates this educational activity for a maximum of 16 category 1 credits toward the AMA Physician's Recognition Award. Each physician should claim only those credits that he/she actually spent in the activity.

This course is presented in cooperation with the University of South Carolina Beaufort (USCB).

This CME activity is planned and presented in accordance with the Essential Areas and policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education.

Faculty and commercial support relationships will be disclosed to participants at the course. Off-label/investigative uses of commercial products/devices will also be disclosed.

Speaker Panel:
The faculty and moderator will participate in a question and answer panel to discuss current clinical issues in the practice of general surgery.
